Dr. Ellie Izzo is co-founder and Director of Vicarious Trauma Institute. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor and has been in clinical practice since 1982. She received her Master’s Degree from Long Island University in 1982 and her Ph.D. in Health and Human Service from Columbia Commonwealth University in 2007. Ellie developed Rapid Advance Process—a standardized five-session brief model of counseling, in response to a serious problem experienced by millions of professionals in the human service field–Vicarious Trauma. Although limited research has been conducted and some in the professional community have just begun talking about it, treatment for Vicarious Trauma had not been developed. Dr. Izzo’s Rapid Advance Process was developed to meet that need and is helping to heal thousands of professionals who help others. She authored a book on Rapid Advance Process, The Bridge To I Am: Rapid Advance Psychotherapy. She co-authored a second book, Day After Day The Price You Pay: Managing Your Second-Hand ShockTM and the accompanying Second-Hand Shock Workbook with Vicki Carpel Miller. Dr. Izzo presented Rapid Advance Process to the American Counseling Association convention in Atlanta in 1997 and again in Honolulu in 2008. She is the co-founder and a core trainer with the Vicarious Trauma Institute, introducing the Rapid Advance Process for treatment of Vicarious Trauma. She also serves as a Divorce Coach, Child Specialist and/or Team Manager in the process of Collaborative Divorce, whereby a team of professionals help a couple move through divorce respectfully, without litigating. She presents for numerous conferences and conventions, hosted a call-in radio show in Phoenix and served as Self-Help Editor for a nationally syndicated trade magazine. She is currently the psychology advisor for AZ Teen Magazine and runs several ongoing groups called the Encouragers, where people meet to offer each other peace, support and acceptance. Her memberships include the American Psychological Association, American Counseling Association, American Mental Health Counselors Association, International Academy of Collaborative Professionals and Collaborative Divorce Professionals of Arizona. She is married with children and grandchildren.
